A popular Coney Island restaurant is facing backlash over a scheduled fundraiser benefiting the National Rifle Association.
Gargiulo's Italian Restaurant is set to host a Friends of NRA fundraiser April 12. A flyer promoting the event indicates that part of the fundraising will be auctioning off several guns, including pistols and rifles.
A coalition of city, state and federal leaders, including City Councilman Mark Treyger and U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, issued a joint statement denouncing the event and urging the restaurant to cancel it.
A co-owner of Gargiulo's says they are contractually obligated to host the event, adding that they do not discriminate with whom they do business.
Several companies nationwide have distanced themselves from the NRA since the Feb. 14 high school shooting that left 17 people dead in Parkland, Florida.
