CANARSIE -

Police say a 12-year-old girl was raped at knifepoint in her Canarsie home.

Sources tell News 12 that the girl was home alone March 5 when the suspect somehow sneaked inside. They say he hid behind a shower curtain until the girl entered the bathroom, and then proceeded to rape her. The girl suffered a cut on her hand.

Investigators say they believe a door may have been unlocked, allowing the perpetrator to enter the home. He's described as a heavyset man standing between 5 feet 4 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was last seen wearing a face mask and winter gloves. News 12 is told that he spoke with a Caribbean accent.

The incident happened in the area of Farragut Road and Remsen Avenue, which is close to a school.

Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
