Mayor Bill de Blasio is joining community efforts for more road safety measures after two young children were fatally struck by a car earlier this month.
The mayor and other community members are asking for lawmakers in Albany to expand the city’s school zone speed enforcement camera program and for the city to install 150 additional speed cameras at school zones, more than double its current number.
"Right now cars are speeding through the city and pedestrians are stepping into crosswalks a game of chance at every corner.” said Carla Cancelmo, who was once struck by a vehicle. “It could be you or someone you love next.”
Community members are also asking for the definition of a school zone to be revised so the New York Department of Transportation can address speeding on streets near schools.
