March is Women's History month and one local woman is making her mark by telling inspiring stories of women who faced adversity and exceeded expectations, hoping young girls will use them as role models.
Vashti Harrison, author of Little Leaders: Big Bold Women in Black History, says she wishes she knew more stories of strong women when she was growing up, which inspired her to give back to the next generation.
She says it all started with an Instagram post she made after she lost her job.
"February 2017, I had this idea to draw a picture of a black woman every day for the month of February for Black History Month," Harrison says. "And post a short biography with her picture on social media. It kind of picked up really quickly. I can see people were really excited about it and I was really excited about it."
Harrison's book recently won a NAACP Image Award. She has also appeared on the Daily Show to talk about her book and has even had it profiled in Ebony Magazine.
