A town hall event held by Congress members Nydia Velazquez, Yvette Clarke and Hakeem Jeffries tonight aims to inform and encourage Brooklyn residents to be active in the upcoming midterm elections.
At the event, called 'Stand Up Brooklyn,' the officials discussed topics like the current political climate along with ways to get a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives. Other issues discussed include immigration, the environment and gun control.
The officials also referenced the current Trump administration, saying they'd like participants to actively resist some of the policies being executed by the president. They say the purpose of this event is for residents who are looking for ways to fight back.
"So many people are frustrated," said Velazquez. "So many people are concerned about the direction of our country; and we organize this political town hall meeting to give a venue for people to come and discuss ideas."
Some of the audience members include local community activists, motivated residents as well as other city officials.
