A widespread power outage has left the entirety of Puerto Rico in the dark as it continues recovering from last year's devastating Hurricane Maria.
New York City residents with relatives on the island territory say the outage is a major setback and couldn't have come at a worse time. Many on the island now fear there could be more outages as hurricane season approaches.
Puerto Rico has been impacted by several outages over the past few months, but Wednesday's blackout was the first time the whole island was affected since Hurricane Maria.
Families in the five boroughs said they were calling their loved ones to find out if they were safe. One person spoke with their uncle over the phone. He said there were long lines forming on the island for food and gas.
Officials said it could take 24 to 36 hours to fully restore power to the island.
