80th District special election candidates lay out agenda

The two candidates vying to represent the 80th District in the state Assembly spoke with News 12 before next week’s special election.
Born and bred in the Bronx, Republican candidate Gene DeFrancis served in the United States Navy in naval intelligence and is the founder of the Allerton International Merchants Association.
His Democratic opponent, Nathalia Fernandez, is also a longtime Bronx resident. She served as chief of staff under current City Councilman Mark Gjonaj – who vacated the assembly seat.
Both candidates said they believe education and health care will be top priorities if elected.
Fernandez believes her experience will help move the borough forward.
“I understand state government and how to get the best out of it,” she says.
DeFrancis believes it’s time for a change.
“I would bring in new resources that the political elite only share with themselves,” said DeFrancis.
The 80th Assembly District covers Norwood, Morris Park, Pelham Parkway and Allerton. The election will be held on Tuesday, April 24.
