Some tenants in Co-op City grilled the city's Health Department Thursday night after reports that three people were diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease.

One of them died.

The meeting was held to debunk rumors about what's happening at the buildings. Officials say the disease was not officially found in them, but water testing is planned for this weekend.

Residents of three Carver Loop buildings said they are worried about their water and their safety -- especially those who are elderly and sick and are at a higher risk of contracting the virus.

The Department of Health passed out flyers with information about Legionnaire's disease, its symptoms and recommendations for the residents of the buildings.

Recommendations include avoid taking showers because the bacteria travels through water mist. Health experts say the water is safe to drink, but if anyone has cold- or flu-like symptoms they should see their physicians immediately.

As News 12 has reported, all three recent cases infected people who had pre-existing conditions. Neighbors say it's enough information to be alarmed.
