City Council members inspected NYCHA homes in Brownsville Saturday.

The inspection is part of a citywide initiative aimed at highlighting unsanitary and unsafe living conditions.

Tenants at the Howard Houses showed Councilwoman Alicka-Ampry Samuel problems they say they've been living with for years. They say they've been dealing with mold, mildew and vermin.

Senior residents specifically say they are tired of dealing with these issues.

"They don't do nothing," said NYCHA tenant Elizabeth Whetstone. "I put a complaint a lot of time and they don't come."

NYCHA tenants and local officials are calling on the mayor to improve public housing by building 15,000 new affordable apartments for seniors on NYCHA land. They’re also are asking for nearly $1 billion for boiler repairs and new heating equipment.

"They deserve adequate housing, they deserve safe housing, they deserve clean housing," Samuel says. "So we're just here together to call on the mayor to do the right thing."

The final stop on these tours will be at City Hall, where a big rally is planned for Tuesday.
