News 12 got a behind-the-scenes look Wednesday at new upgrades to the Long Island Rail Road station at Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn.
Beginning Wednesday, LIRR trains will use the newly constructed west portal to directly access the Vanderbilt Yard rail storage site.
Railroad officials say the opening of the west portal will circumvent a more convoluted route to the Brooklyn yard that would turn into delays for riders.
The two-year project was paid for through a deal with the developer of the nearby Barclays Center.
Work is also being performed on another portal that is expected to be completed by January 2019.
Officials say the railroad's on-time performance improved by about 4 percent for the month of March.
