Asbury Park residents and business owners are being urged to register their privately owned surveillance cameras with the town in order to help combat crime.
The cameras will be registered with the Asbury Park Police Department and residents would be contacted if a crime occurs in their area. Police would then look at the camera footage to see if any evidence can be found.
The program is completely voluntary, and personal information will not be shared.
Several other towns in New Jersey have similar programs, most recently Newark.
Residents who wish to register their cameras can do so at the town’s website.
