Mayor de Blasio calls for additional speed cameras, safer streets

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday urged state lawmakers to act on the expansion of additional speed cameras in the city and the redesign of a deadly intersection.
The mayor made his announcement at the site of a deadly crash in Brooklyn's Park Slope area that killed two children and an unborn baby. The mayor says the city will also redesign Ninth Street, where the accident happened. The proposal includes expanded pedestrian access and protected bike lanes.
De Blasio is pushing state lawmakers to reauthorize and expand the speed enforcement camera program by installing cameras at an addition 150 school zones, redefining "school zone" to put up cameras in more areas and extending the program until 2022.
The current program is set to expire next month.
