A new research initiative to measure noise pollution is underway in Brooklyn and New York City.

There are about 10 sensors installed throughout Brooklyn to record data to show the level of noise pollution in the borough. The Sounds of New York City project, or SONYC, is a collaboration between New York University and Ohio State University. 

Researchers say the sensors can identify noise hotspots, but they can't pick up entire conversations.

The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership is also supporting the project.

"They'll be monitoring this noise pollution and sending us recommendations to improve and mitigate noise control and noise reduction," says Camille Hoisington, of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership.

The sensors will be up for at least three years to get a good amount of data.
