#N12BK: Birth certificate gender choices
New legislation being introduced in the City Council this week would let parents pick a third gender option on their baby’s birth certificate.
City Council Speaker Corey Johnson will introduce legislation this week allowing those who don’t identify as male or female to change their gender marker to “X.” Parents would also be able to choose “X” for their newborns.
The legislation comes as pride month kicks off.
Currently, parents can choose “undetermined” or “unknown” for their babies.
California, Oregon and Washington already have a third category on birth certificates.
Public hearings could begin next month. A vote could happen as early as September.
