A Long Beach resident says he’s upset with a plan that will move a bench he dedicated to his parents 2013.
Warren Vegh said he wanted to do something special for his parents, Maurice and Phyllis Vegh, both longtime Long Beach residents.
His father, a Holocaust survivor, is about to turn 88. His mother passed away a few years ago.
In 2013, he dedicated a bench to them. It sits right outside the Long Beach library's front door near a free Wi-Fi spot.
The library's director Michael Simon says the Board of Trustees started getting complaints from the public about the bench being used by vagrants.
According to a letter from the library, the board "voted unanimously" last month to find a new location for the bench.
Vegh says he was devastated.
“I couldn't believe that they would do such a thing,” said Vegh.
The library's director says the bench would be moved to the second floor of the library near the auditorium, the art gallery and the children’s library. He says the new location is highly trafficked and keeps with the nature of the gift.
Warren Vegh says he doesn't want it inside the library, where he thinks it will be lost.
