Concerned residents and Department of Education officials rallied Thursday in Gravesend to keep speed cameras outside city schools.
They gathered outside P.S. 215 to demand that state Sen. Marty Golden and his fellow legislators return to Albany to pass a measure that would extend and expand the speed camera safety program that is set to expire July 25.
Rally attendees say it's unacceptable to deactivate speed cameras at schools citywide.
According to the group Transportation Alternatives, the city has 2,000 school speed zones and 140 speed cameras, meaning only about 7 percent of school zones are covered.
Residents say they want Golden to follow through on his stated support for the camera program and guide a new bill to a vote in the state Senate. That bill would keep the program and increase the number of cameras to 290.
A spokesperson for Golden says the politician knows the importance of speed cameras and even co-sponsored legislation to double the number of them citywide.
