A 2-year-old boy died in Bridgeport pool accident Thursday, police say.

A call reporting the incident in a backyard swimming pool on Charron Street came in around 7:30 p.m.

EMTs responded to the scene and performed CPR on the boy. He was rushed to St. Vincent's Medical Center and pronounced dead, according to a city spokesperson.

"This is an excruciating tragedy," says Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this child who somehow ended up in the water and lost his life."
