Street named after Haitian revolutionary leader

A street was renamed after a Haitian revolutionary leader with the help of elected officials in East Flatbush.
The street is now called Jean-Jacques Dessalines Boulevard, which runs about 30 blocks from Farragut Road to Eastern Parkway.
Haitians in Brooklyn say they look up to Dessalines as a hero who led their people to freedom, and that the new street name pays tribute to where they come from.
Critics of the renaming say Dessalines led a bloody war and killed French civilians.
