Prospect Park South blaze injures firefighters, displaces 11

A fire early Wednesday in Prospect Park South injured multiple firefighters and displaced 11 people.
Officials say the flames started around 3:30 a.m. in the basement of a building on Coney Island Avenue. There's a tire shop on the first floor and apartments above.
The fire took several hours to get under control. The intensity of the blaze at one point caused firefighters to exit the building and tackle the flames from the street.
Five firefighters suffered minor injuries.
The Red Cross is working to find housing for the displaced residents. Volunteers say there were no working smoke detectors in the building. They let residents know about the Red Cross' free smoke alarm installation program.
Last July, a fire broke out across the street at Rocky's Pizzeria. It remains closed.
