Neighbors of a park in Cypress Hills want to know why construction stopped and the site has been closed to the public.
Aaron Gadson says the Sperandeo Brothers Playground on Liberty Avenue and Cleveland Street has been locked for years.
Crews only partially finished work on the handball courts there. The basketball court is unusable. And the track field has become a garbage dump and eyesore -- according to Gadson.
He says the park was under construction for years, with signs outside announcing an anticipated completion date of spring 2017.
More than a year later, he says the park is far from finished.
Neighbors say the park would be the only nearby option for local kids.
The city Parks Department blamed a contractor who defaulted halfway through construction, delaying the completion day.
"The good news is that we have a new contractor to finish the sports courts, and work began this week," a spokesperson said. "We expect it to be reopened to the community by the end of the year."
