A corridor study of the Prospect Expressway in Brooklyn was released Monday, prompting new ways to improve the roadway.

Elected officials say the expressway has been a blight on the neighborhoods surrounding it.

"Two neighborhoods were really ripped apart by this expressway," says Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams. "Four-hundred structures had to be destroyed, 1,200 families had to be displaced."

Officials say they enlisted the help of New York University Wagner Graduate School of Public Service students to formulate improvements for the roadway.

The students were able to generate new ideas during a yearlong consulting assignment.

"Recommendations included changing pedestrian bridges, developing a cyclist and pedestrian path along the length of the expressway, strengthening small parks in the corridor and opportunities for enlarging pedestrian decks over the expressway," says graduate student Brent Ginsberg.

The New York state Department of Transportation is being urged to consider the recommendations of the plan.
