Good Samaritan helps dog abandoned in Prospect Park
A community effort has helped an abandoned dog get the help it needed.
Just two days ago, a dog was found tied to a tree in Prospect Park with a note saying, "Please take me."
Eric Maus, a dog walker from the area, was at the right place at the right time. The note also said the dog's name is Mamas, she is 7 years old and added "don't let my size scare you, I'm sweet."
Maus knew something felt wrong, and wanted to make it right. So he took a picture and posted it to Facebook.
The dog appeared to be in pain and had trouble walking.
"She would have to stop every five minutes and pee and unfortunately she was peeing blood," Maus said.
When Maus arrived with Mamas at Prospect Park, he realized his social media post had garnered a lot of attention. Within five minutes, he says a woman from Lost and Found Pets in Brooklyn contacted him and said where to take the dog.
A stranger then drove Maus and Mamas to Sean Casey Animal Rescue where she got a bath, vet appointments and a lot of company.
"Sadly it's very common," Sean Casey said. "We get several a month that are left tied out."
The shelter's founder says owners often can't afford their dogs any longer, but he says it's better to reach out to a local shelter and ask for help.
