Police: Driver on drugs killed bicyclist in Middle Island

A 56-year-old man from Ridge was killed Saturday morning after he was struck by a driver accused of being on drugs.
Investigators say the incident occurred on Middle Country Road in Middle Island at around 4:30 a.m.
Police say Stephen Salzman was riding his bike when he was struck by a Mitsubishi Lancer driven by 27-year-old Vincent Rienzie, Jr.
They say Rienzie was heading west when he suddenly veered out of his lane, struck Salzman and slammed into a utility pole.
Rienzie was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. It was not immediately clear what kind of drugs he allegedly took before the fatal crash.
Rienzie is facing a driving while ability impaired by drugs charge. He's scheduled to be arraigned Sunday.
