A community meeting held in Greenpoint provided an update to residents about the ongoing plan to clean up the former site of a plastics factory found to be leaking hazardous waste.

The New York State Department of Envrionmental Conservation proposed a remedial action plan for the NuHart superfund site on Dupont Street.

The superfund site was the location of a factory until 2004 when underground hazardous materials were found to be leaking into soil, groundwater and soil vapor.

The NYSDEC evaluated several plans to go about the cleaning process, and decided go with installing a sheet pile containment system to serve as a barrier. The plan also calls for the excavation and removal of chemicals to a depth of about 20 feet.

A barrier would also be installed around parts of the site to keep contaminants from continuing to seep into groundwater and soil.

The timeline calls for a public comment period followed by a decision that is expected by the end of the year.

The proposed remedy has been a work in progress for years, with many in the neighborhood adding their comments before the period ends on Nov. 19.
