Dozens of the NYPD's top brass and fellow 67th Precinct officers on Wednesday honored one of their own who was injured in the line of duty.
Detective Dalsh Veve was executing a traffic stop in East Flatbush in June 2017. Police say the suspect, 16-year-old Justin Murrell, was driving a stolen car. Murrell allegedly dragged Veve for 2 1/2 blocks.
Veve's injuries left him unable to speak and walk. He was released from a rehab facility in May.
On Wednesday, Veve received the Assistant Chief Patrick D. Brennan Police Officer of the Year Award.
The son of the namesake of the award commended Veve.
"My father was an immigrant similar to Detective Veve, and in both instances they were individuals who left their homeland and when they got here, decided to make this place the greatest place they possibly could," says Martin Brennan.
Before the ceremony, officers had a special moment as they pinned the detective shield on Veve for the first time.
Murrell will face a judge again on Nov. 13.
