Jury convicts gang leader in deadly 2015 shooting

BROOKLYN -

A federal jury has convicted a man who authorities call the leader of a violent street gang for a deadly shooting at the Buda Hookah Lounge in August 2015.

Authorities say 39-year-old Larry Pagett was the leader of the Eight Trey Crips street gang, which had essentially been at war with the Folk Nation gang, leading to the gunfire that killed Chrispine Philip.

Pagett was convicted of murder in aid of racketeering.

The deadly encounter was caught on surveillance cameras inside the lounge. The footage shows a crowded club suddenly plunge into chaos and panic when the gunfire erupts. Authorities say one bystander was wounded in the shooting but ultimately survived.

According to the U.S. attorney's office, Pagett had blamed his rival for the death of one of his fellow gang members earlier that year.

Once sentenced by a federal judge, Pagett faces a mandatory term of life in prison.
