Two entrepreneurs are following through on their mission to bring locally sourced food to Brooklyn.
Tobias Peggs and Kimball Musk, brother of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, started Square Roots in 2016. They say that crops typically travel for months from all around the globe, and the consumer does not get the freshest product.
The company operates out of the Acumen Building on Flushing Avenue, where people in the next-gen farmer training program work. They grow their crops in shipping containers.
“If there's 2 feet of snow outdoors, indoors in our containers (are) the perfect growing conditions for the plants," says Peggs. "So we can grow beautiful basil like this literally 12 months a year and then get that to customers within 24 hours of the food being harvested."
The company grows herbs, basil, mint, chives, oregano, thyme and more. Retailers from across New York City sell their products.
Square Roots also offers community tours. Their next is scheduled for Dec. 11.
