Families in Bensonhurst thankful for holiday food donations

BENSONHURST -

Families in need lined the block in front of the local food pantry in Bensonhurst Monday, thankful for the holiday food donations.

The Food Bank for New York City, Stop and Shop and organizations like the Verrazano Rotary donated more than 300 turkeys so that families will have a full spread this Thanksgiving.

The Food Bank for New York City says the number of people who don't have access to three meals a day is on the rise.

"Specifically here in Brooklyn, we know more than 470,000 residents are living in a place of food insecurity and 18,000 of those are children," says Zanita Tisdale, of the Food Bank for New York City.

The organization says cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program back in 2013 cost New York City residents more than $1 billion in benefits that were lost.

Food Bank for New York City says residents should let their elected officials know to halt cuts to SNAP. The organization says it needs all the help it can get.
