City Councilman Mark Treyger wants to add American icon Woody Guthrie’s name to a street in Coney Island.
The singer-songwriter spent much of his life on Mermaid Avenue. Treyger says he’s working to add Guthrie’s name to the corner of Mermaid Avenue and West 35th Street.
“When he passed away, he wanted his ashes spread on the beach here in Coney Island and his family honored his request,” says City Councilman Mark Treyger. “I think we have an obligation to pay tribute to those who are the building blocks of our society today.”

Treyger says the name Mermaid Avenue won’t go away – it’ll just say Woody Guthrie Way above it.
