Police: 3 shot in theft plot gone wrong
Three people are recovering from bullet wounds after a plot to steal an iPhone turned violent, police say.
Police say the incident began around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when six shots were fired at the Shell gas station on North Avenue.
News 12 Connecticut is told that the 15-year-old suspected shooter had set out to steal an iPhone from someone at the business when shots were fired, resulting in three people being injured – one of them was a friend of the shooter.
Chief AJ Perez says that police believe the suspect was part of a group of individuals that tries to lure others into a specific area to rob them. Perez says that the suspect and the group he was with lured an individual into the business after convincing the individual that they were going to buy the iPhone.
Police also say that the shooter is the brother of one of the suspects arrested in connection with the murder of 12-year-old Clinton Howell back on Dec. 18.
They say they do not believe the two cases are connected.
The victims were taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center. Authorities say their injuries were not life-threatening.
News 12 is told that it is thanks to the city’s new automatic gunfire detection system, ShotSpotter, that police were able to have a suspect in custody within minutes.
ShotSpotter uses high-tech microphones to pinpoint the location of gunfire and automatically report it. Authorities say its success in this case is a good example of what can be done when science gives police a significant advantage.
The identities of the victim, those injured and their role in the plot were not immediately available.
Police say a judge has since released the shooter because he is underage, but there are plans to re-arrest him soon on amended charges.
