Police confirm a person of interest is being questioned in connection to a violent attempted rape in Williamsburg.

Police sources tell News 12 he turned himself in Wednesday morning with family members at the 90th Precinct in Williamsburg.

Police say one of his family members allegedly recognized him from surveillance video that the NYPD put out Tuesday night just hours after they say he attacked and tried to rape a 26-year-old woman inside her Williamsburg apartment building.

It happened around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday when the victim walked into her building near the corner of Havemeyer and South Second streets and was on the first-floor landing when a man came up behind her and punched her in the back of the head, according to investigators.
Police say the man then got on top of her and tried to pull down her clothing. However, officers say she resisted punching him back, causing him to bleed, and was able to get away from him.
