Friends and family gathered in Canarsie Friday night for a vigil remembering an 11-year-old boy who may have died from an allergic reaction to smelling fish that was being cooked.

Cameron Jean-Pierre lived in New Jersey but was visiting his grandmother in Brooklyn for New Year's.

The boy's mother says he had asthma and was allergic to fish. The grandmother and an aunt were cooking a traditional Caribbean fish dish when the boy inhaled the fumes and became ill. His family carries a nebulizer machine to treat attacks but it didn't work. He died at Brookdale Hospital.

People packed 82nd Street Friday to show their support for the family. His father says he wants people to remember the boy as a fun, loving child.

Grief counselors were at the boy's school this week.

A GoFundMe page set up for funeral expenses exceeded its goal in a day.

The cause of death has not yet been determined.
