Final farewells begin for fallen FDNY hero

Members of New York's bravest mourned one of their own during a wake Wednesday in Marine Park.
The wake was for Ladder 170 firefighter Steven Pollard, who fell off the Mill Basin drawbridge Sunday while responding to a car crash on the Belt Parkway.
Fire officials say he slipped through a gap on the parkway and fell about 52 feet.
Pollard, 30, had been on the job for about a year and a half. He passed his probation to become tenured a few months ago.
Pollard comes from a family with a history of service in the FDNY. His father retired after more than 30 years of service, and his brother has been with the fire department for 11 years.
Another wake will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and again from 7 to 9 p.m. at Marine Park Funeral Home at 3024 Quentin Road.
A funeral will take place Friday at the Good Shepherd Church at 1950 Batchelder St.
