Activists claim NYPD officers wrongfully detained teens
Activists held a rally outside the 81st Precinct in Bedford-Stuyvesant Thursday night, claiming officers harassed and wrongfully detained two teenagers last week.
The rally stems from an incident on the B46 bus last week. Laronne Chance, 16, and Elijah Kinsale, 17, say they got on the bus after a fight broke out that they were not part of.
The teens claim they were cursed and yelled at by the officers, who later took them into custody. The NYPD says the teens were acting aggressively toward the officers and were issued summonses for disorderly conduct before being released to their families.
Video footage of the incident isn't conclusive. Activists are calling on the department to release any body camera recordings.
"What these officers did on that B46 bus that day was unacceptable and we will not tolerate nothing like that in our community, we need justice and we need it now," says Rev. Kevin McCall, of the National Action Network.
Attendees say they want the 81st Precinct officer removed from the force.
According to the activists, there will be a meeting next week between the families and the commanding officer of the precinct.
