New Jersey State Police say that troopers responded to hundreds of car crashes and assisted hundreds of more motorists during Tuesday’s winter storm.
The Feb. 12 snowstorm did not produce much snow, but coated most of the state in layers of ice, leading to slick and potentially dangerous roads.
State police say that troopers responded to at least 713 motor vehicle crashes and assisted 658 additional drivers between 6 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Wednesday. Police say that “motorist aids’ can be anything from a flat tire, mechanical breakdown or spin out.
One such crash happened Tuesday afternoon when a bus flipped onto its side on the Turnpike in Woodbridge. Police say that 18 people were treated for minor injuries during that crash.
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority put some speed restriction on the Turnpike and Garden State Parkway during the storm due to the road conditions.
State police also issued a commercial vehicle travel ban on all interstate highways that passed through the state. This was done to allow road crews ample space to clear and treat the roads.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation says that there were over 2,000 salt trucks and snowplows out on state roads Tuesday to help clear away the snow.
