NYCHA tenant facing eviction for housing ‘sex offender’ says she’s never met him
A tenant at NYCHA's Albany Houses says she's being threatened with eviction for allegedly housing a sex offender, but she says she's never even met him.
Sharena McEachern has lived at the complex in Crown Heights for more than a decade. She says she's paid her rent on time and has never had a problem with her neighbors, but now she's facing possible eviction.
On Saturday, McEachern says she received a letter stating that a level 2 sex offender is living at her apartment, which would violate her lease. But she says she's never met or even heard of the offender, and she only lives with her son.
McEachern believes it amounts to harassment because she has been vocal about the conditions in her building. News 12 spoke with her back in August 2016 about a kitchen leak that led to mold. NYCHA fixed it, but the response was slow, and McEachern had to take the agency to court.
Following News 12's report, McEachern says NYCHA hasn't responded to other work orders that she's submitted.
McEachern, who was recently diagnosed with epilepsy, says she doesn't know what she would do if she were to lose her apartment.
News 12 reached out to NYCHA for comment on the matter. The agency was working to provide a response.
McEachern plans to continue fighting. Her next court date is scheduled for April to address the recent allegations, and Advocates Without Borders is helping in the effort.
