Police say a woman was found dead inside an apartment at Bushwick Houses, and another is in critical condition.
First responders were called to the scene around 1:30 a.m., but saw that the injured 21-year-old victim had found her own way to the hospital.
When investigators checked the woman's apartment, they found her 4-year-old daughter unharmed hiding in the bathroom and a woman in her 20s with multiple stab wounds and lacerations to both the head and body.
Police say the woman was found nearly decapitated. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The Deputy Commissioner Public Information says the victim has been identified as 20-year-old Savannah Rivera.
Police have confirmed an ax was found in the building's garbage shoot at 811 Flushing Ave. but they cannot confirm if it was used during the incident.
The 21-year-old victim was able to flag down an Uber and the driver then called her an ambulance. That victim has yet to be identified.
Rivera's family says they believe the suspect is her friend's boyfriend.
Police say they have a person of interest in connection to the slaying.
