Police say an 88-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in her East New York home Wednesday.

Around 2 p.m., a 24-year-old man entered the woman's house, brought her down to the basement and sexually assaulted her, according to police.

Authorities say the assault took place less than a mile away from the intersection of Sheffield and Livonia avenues, where a suspect was arrested.

The woman was taken to Brookdale Medical Center to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. She is in stable condition.

Police have not yet identified the suspect and say that charges are pending.
