Parents, assemblyman file petition to improve safety at Bensonhurst intersection

BENSONHURST -

Parents are coming together with a petition for changes to an intersection in a Bensonhurst school zone.

The intersection is at the corner of Stillwell Avenue and Avenue P.

Stephanie Mansfield, of Bensonhurst, said she almost lost her son when he was crossing the street at the intersection last month.

Surveillance video from the corner of the intersection shows Mansfield’s 3-year-old leaving his day care, holding his teacher’s hand. Seconds later, a car slammed into the two of them.

Mansfield told News 12 that her son was taken to the hospital. The teacher is not back at school yet.

The Department of Transportation says there were 22 recorded injuries at the intersection between 2013 and 2017. One of those was severe.

While signs have been installed to lower drivers’ speed, parents say it’s still as dangerous as ever.

Mansfield has teamed up with Assemblyman William Colton to file a petition to ask the city for more speed bumps and traffic signs.

The Department of Transportation told News 12 that it is evaluating the intersection to see if changes are warranted.
