Police: Man who caused Midwood building collapse faces DWI charge

Crews responded to the scene of a building collapse on Avenue P and East 5th Street Monday night.

A 20-year-old man is facing a slew of charges, including DWI, for allegedly striking a building in Midwood his car, causing it to partially collapse.
The scene unfolded at the corner of Avenue P and East Fifth Street. In surveillance footage, a BMW can be seen headed down Avenue P around 11:30 p.m. just before the impact.
The crash took down support beams in the building, causing it to partially collapse. There was no one badly hurt. Authorities say no one was inside at the time.
Police arrested Andrew Baird, who allegedly fled the scene on foot.
The Department of Buildings has ordered that the corner building be fully vacated. The building next door is under partial vacate orders.
The DOB told News 12 that the Red Cross has offered to help any residents who were affected.
