Red Cross assists people displaced after Avenue P building collapse

Those living along Avenue P in Midwood are picking up the pieces after a crash caused a building on the block to collapse.
Surveillance video shows a driver of a BMW drive straight into a two-story building around 11:30 p.m. Monday, causing the building to collapse.
Police have since arrested 20-year-old Andrew Baird and hit him with a slew of charges including DWI and leaving the scene of an accident.
A spokesperson for the Department of Buildings says the crash caused several of the supports to become dislodged, and ultimately, that is what led to the collapse. The car that caused the crash is still buried under the rubble, according to officials.
Out of concern that the rest of the building would also collapse, officials have ordered vacate orders to 496 and 494 Avenue P and have also ordered a wall be put up around the building.
There were several people living in the buildings. News 12 is told the Red Cross is working with them to find new housing.
