Size of proposed Brooklyn jail draws concerns from neighbors

A group of Boerum Hill neighbors say they're concerned about plans for a new jail in Brooklyn.
The proposed jail would stand at the current site of the Brooklyn Detention Complex at 275 Atlantic Ave. The current building would be demolished.
It is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's plan to close Rikers Island and build a borough-based jail system.
Some neighbors say they agree that closing Rikers is a good idea, but are concerned about the proportions of the new building, which is due to be much larger than the existing one.
In a recent community board meeting, the decisions was made to not give any recommendations. Some neighbors say that's because there was not enough transparency as to the capacity and facilities within the building.
This plan now goes over to the Brooklyn borough president's office for his own recommendations.
