A Bronx hospital is stepping up safety measures to help fight the measles outbreak.

Montefiore Health System's new protocol for emergency room visitors are designed to fight the spread of measles. Visitors are screened and asked a series of questions in a specialized area outside the emergency room before they can enter.

"This prevents a person who has measles from entering the waiting room and potentially sitting among others who are vulnerable to measles and spreading the virus while waiting to see a physician," says Dr. Teresa Madeline.

If an individual is suspected or diagnosed with measles, they are transported to a specialized mobile unit.

Dr. Madeline says there are at least 700 measles cases in New York, with a concentration in Rockland County. Since the outbreak, four cases have been confirmed at Montefiore.

Hospital administrators believe the new stepped up procedures are helping to keep measles cases down at the hospital.
