Community calls to stop violence after man was killed near his home

CROWN HEIGHTS -

Community members gathered Saturday at the intersection where a man was killed earlier this week calling to stop the violence.

Jamal Simms, 29, was shot in the head on the corner of Saint Marks Avenue and New York Avenue, after a dispute. He was just a block away from his home.

Police say it happened around 7 p.m. Thursday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Community leaders say more needs to be done to keep the people in the area safe.

They called for an increased police presence and more money to be put into programs focusing on mental health, job skills training and after school initiatives.

The group says it is especially important now as the crime rate often rises in the summer.

Police say they have questioned several people in connection to the shooting but don't have anyone in custody at this time.
