Sen. Gounardes, Brooklyn students team up to prevent pedestrian accidents

After a recent spike in car accidents in Brooklyn, Sen. Andrew Gounardes is taking steps to bring those numbers down in the future.
Gounardes is teaming up with high school students to create the Pedestrian Safety Youth Task Force. The goal is to prevent children and teens from being involved in vehicle accidents.
City data shows that in the first four months of this year, there have already been more than 3,000 injuries from pedestrian accidents, and nearly 40 deaths.
"They travel the streets just as much as their parents do. They travel the streets and they're just as vulnerable as anyone is in our community and often times their voices get lost in a lot of these discussions," says Gounardes.
Gounardes says the initiative is complementary of the city's Vision Zero campaign.
Members of the task force say they plan to push for legislation as a way to continue their efforts to keep the streets safe.
