Parents wonder why Ditmas Park playground renovations have not begun

Posted: Updated:

Parents say they are concerned about a playground with safety concerns after a contracting company failed to start renovations on time.

Construction at the Lt. Federico Narvaez Tot Lot in Ditmas Park was set to begin in April, but the project has still not begun months later.

Parents say they're concerned about hazards in the park, such as cracks in the playground surface and flooding that occurs after rainfall.

Plans for the construction include new benches, fencing, water supply systems and drains for the flooding problems. Construction had been set to be completed by April 2020.

Parents say they're stuck in limbo trying to figure out where to take their children without many close options in the neighborhood.

"I think the neighborhood really needs this park," says Ditmas Park resident Olivia Cholak. "There aren't that many green spaces around, and I think it's a great place for the community."

The Parks Department responded to the confusion in a statement, saying, "Unfortunately, the contractor on this project, Trinchese Construction, has failed to start work on the tot lot project. We've communicated with them that they are at risk of defaulting, and we are pursuing our options for potentially awarding the contract to another bidder. Right now, we don't have an estimate for a new timeline."

News 12 reached out to Trinchese Construction for a comment, but has not heard back.
