A bilingual bookstore in Bushwick is struggling to keep their doors open due to financial hardship.

Maria Herron, owner of Mil Mundos Books, recently launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $50,000 to keep the bookstore open. The shop has only been open for three months.

Herron says she's worked hard to create a space that reflects her neighborhood. Half of the books in the store are in Spanish specifically for that reason.

She says she opened this space with the vision of investing in her community of Bushwick amid rapid gentrification.

"We make a pretty public and deliberate effort to curate to black and Latin heritage in this space," says Herron.

Herron is hoping to raise enough capital to stay open until the next school semester.
