An East New York senior center took to the streets to say enough is enough after an assault on one of their staff members.
Senior citizens from La Familia Adult Day Center were joined by community leaders as they spoke out on June 18 against the assault of a staff member.
Members of the center organized an anti-violence walk to raise awareness of the assault.
La Familia Adult Day Center member Mohammed Uddin says the 62-year-old victim, Mohammed Mostafa Kamal, teaches religious classes at the center. He says Kamal did not want to take part in the anti-violence walk for safety reasons.
He says Kamal told him he was walking home after tutoring some students in the neighborhood when he was punched in the face in May.
"When I saw him that day he couldn't talk, still can't talk properly, he can't eat properly," says Uddin.
News 12 is told Kamal also had to have surgery.
Police confirm that Kamal reported an assault on Belmont Avenue and Pine Street. They say he was taken to Jamaica Hospital and was treated for a fractured jaw and fractured right pinky finger. The incident is being investigated as an assault.
The senior center says it is not just speaking out against Kamal’s assault, but also another recent incident where its van was destroyed.
The center says it hopes the anti-violence message echoes loudly through the neighborhood, so this doesn't happen again.
