Teen accuses East New York deli workers of assault

Posted: Updated:

A 14-year-old claims he was attacked by employees of an East New York deli.

Corey Heath Jr. says he got into a fight with a deli employee when two other workers of a fried chicken shop joined in on the attack.

"He flinched at me so then we started fighting," Heath Jr. said. "After that, everybody started hitting me with bats and stuff."

The teenager suffered a long cut to his arm and a gash in the back of his head that needed to be closed with staples.

The manager of the deli says the person that Heath Jr. fought was not an employee, but a delivery man. He says his employees only intervened to try and break up the fight.

The manager also shared video with News 12, which appeared to show the teen retaliating later in the evening when he allegedly returned with several family members to attack their employees. He says video of the initial fight was inaccessible after police reviewed it.

Heath Jr.'s mother says while the video is not available, there is one thing that is clear.

"This is the only fact--my son has staples in his head," she said. "So I don't care what they say. This is a fact."

Police tell News 12 they have a report for an individual striking the 14-year-old but there is no word on whether that person was an employee or if others were involved.

Activists joined the teenager and his family to demand action against the attacker and to deter the community from going to the business.
