A Bronx father is facing manslaughter charges after he claims he mistakenly left his 1-year-old twin babies in the back seat of his hot car while at work.
The mother of the twins, Marissa Rodriguez, is standing by her husband’s side through the devastation.
The mother of the twins broke her silence Sunday in a statement released to the public saying she needs her husband through this rough time.
On Saturday, 39-year-old Juan Rodriguez appeared before a judge where he was charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child, as he plead not guilty.
Rodriguez left Luna and Phoenix in their car seats in the back of his Honda while he went to work at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. When he returned eight hours later, he told police he drove away and shortly after discovered his babies strapped in the back seat and called 911. News 12 is told their body temperatures were 108 degrees.
Rodriguez told authorities he forgot the children were in the car when he parked for work and thought he had dropped them off at day care.
"This is my absolute worst nightmare. Everything I do reminds me of my sweet, intelligent, beautiful babies and I am still in disbelief. Though I am hurting more than I ever imagined possible, I still love my husband," says Marissa A. Rodriguez, mother of the twins. "He is a good person and great father and I know he would've never done anything to hurt our children intentionally. I will never get over this loss and I know he will never forgive himself for this mistake. This was a horrific accident."
News 12 is told Rodriguez is a social worker and an army veteran who served in Iraq and worked helping other veterans.
He appeared in court Aug. 1 with the court ruling no grand jury would be pursued. He will be back in court Aug. 27.
A GoFundMe is set up for the family.
